Healthy Body - Healthy Mind Week

At Oakthorpe, our curriculum is based around building children’s positive emotions and helping them understand themselves as learners. This focus on wellbeing is very important to us and we have seen some great ways in which children and families have developed an understanding of ways to support their emotional health and wellbeing.

We joined other schools across the country to celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week. The children in our Wellbeing Council organised a whole week based around how we develop a healthy body alongside a healthy mind. This has included children in Year 1 and 2 trying out different techniques to improve positivity such as yoga and laughter therapy.

The children have also been working on improving their personal bests. They have chosen activities such as hopping and ‘keepy-uppies’ and developed their understanding of themselves as learners as well as feeling the pride of improving on their personal best.

We finished the week with an ‘alternative sports’ afternoon. Children visited each classroom trying out different sports such as boccia, sitting volleyball and mini-golf. They really enjoyed building up their interests and being inspired by others.
