For each homework, children will be given a set of spellings to investigate. Often this will take the form of having a spelling pattern to investigate were children will need to explore patterns and rules relating to spellings. This helps the children to develop a better understanding of spellings and not just learning a list of words that will not help them to make decisions with new words that follow the same patterns.

In order to investigate these patterns, children need to be using dictionaries and also to look at spelling of words within their reading. Also children can apply their understanding of these spellings by writing them in complex sentences.
